Amazon Web Services and ‘Gang of Lagos’ Ordered to Apologize for Cultural Misrepresentation

In a landmark ruling, Honourable Justice Idowu Alakija of the Lagos High Court has mandated Amazon Web Services Nigeria Limited and the producers of the film ‘Gang of Lagos’ to issue a public apology to the Isale Eko Descendants Union (IDU).

This decision comes after the court found that the film misrepresented the cultural heritage and traditions of the Isale Eko community, portraying the revered Eyo Masquerade as a gang of criminals. The ruling aims to protect the inalienable cultural rights of the indigenous group and ensure respectful representation in media.

The case, filed under Suit No: LD/6903GCM/2023, sought judicial review and was initiated by the IDU, which argued that the film wrongfully depicted the Isale Eko community. Justice Alakija upheld the Terms of Settlement agreed upon by the IDU and the film’s producers, confirming the need for accountability in how cultural narratives are portrayed.

The ruling not only emphasizes the need for accurate cultural representation but also reinforces the rights of indigenous communities as highlighted in the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).Adeniyi Kazeem, SAN, Chairman of the IDU, expressed satisfaction with the judgment and praised the judicial system for its role in safeguarding the cultural rights of Lagos’s indigenous communities.

He called for stricter scrutiny of films to ensure they do not exploit cultural narratives without permission. Kazeem’s statement reflects a broader call for the Lagos State government to enhance oversight of film productions that utilize local cultural material, underscoring the importance of protecting the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria.
