Aichatou El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a ₦2 billion defamation claim against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over statements she says damaged her reputation.

Through her lawyers, Mrs El-Rufai accused the anti-corruption agency of publishing “false and misleading” claims in a May 18, 2026 press release concerning events at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja.

Her legal team argued that the commission’s description of her as someone who “identified herself as the wife of a defendant” questioned her status and portrayed her negatively before the public. The notice also rejected claims that she violated visitation protocols or attempted to attract media attention.

Mrs El-Rufai is demanding a public apology across national newspapers and social media platforms, alongside ₦2 billion in damages for alleged reputational harm and emotional distress. The ICPC has been given 14 days to respond before legal proceedings begin.
