“AEDC Threatens Electricity Disconnection: Presidential Villa, EFCC, 84 Govt Agencies Owe N47.1 Billion”
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has issued a stern warning to no less than 86 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) over an outstanding debt of approximately N47.1 billion. Failure to settle the debt could result in a disconnection of electricity supply.
Among the MDAs facing potential disconnection are the Ministry of Finance, Information, Budget, Works and Housing, Nigeria Police Force, Presidential Villa, CBN Governor, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and state liaison offices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In an official disconnection notice released on Monday, the AEDC has granted the MDAs a grace period of 10 days to settle their debts, with the deadline set for February 28, 2024. Failure to comply may result in a blackout.

The notice from the AEDC emphasized their efforts to resolve the outstanding debts and their disappointment in the MDAs’ non-compliance. It stated, “The Abuja Electricity Distribution PLC is constrained to do this publication with the details of Government, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies with long outstanding unpaid bills for services rendered to them through the provision of electricity supply in that our previous attempts to make them honor their obligations have not achieved the desired results. The relevant MDAs are hereby given notice that the AEDC shall after the expiration of 10 days from the date of this publication, that is, after Wednesday, 28th February, 2024, embark on the disconnection of our services to them until they discharge their obligations to us by paying their debts.”
