Nigeria’s security leadership has taken a dramatic turn as Kayode Egbetokun resigns as Inspector-General of Police (IGP), with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu swiftly appointing Tunji Disu as Acting IGP.

According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Egbetokun stepped down citing pressing family considerations. Tinubu praised his “decades of distinguished service” and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security framework.

Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023 as the 22nd IGP, saw his tenure overshadowed by controversy over retirement age limits and amendments to the Police Act 2020. Critics questioned the legality of his extended stay, while authorities maintained it aligned with his four-year appointment term.

Now, all eyes turn to Disu — a seasoned officer and former head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos — as he takes charge during a critical security period. The President is expected to seek formal confirmation through the Nigeria Police Council and Senate.

With Nigeria facing mounting security challenges, this leadership transition signals a pivotal moment for police reform and national stability.
