FG Orders Release of Comfort Emmanson After Ibom Air Flight Incident – Lifetime Ban Lifted
The Nigerian Federal Government has ordered the withdrawal of the case against Comfort Emmanson, the passenger at the center of a controversial Ibom Air incident on August 10, 2025, paving the way for her immediate release from Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decision after consultations with key stakeholders in the aviation industry, civil society representatives, and legal bodies following public outrage over the case.
“Valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides… and public awareness about appropriate conduct in aviation has been greatly heightened,” Keyamo said.
From Viral Scandal to Policy Reflection
Emmanson’s ordeal began when she allegedly attacked a flight attendant and clashed with airport security officers. The confrontation, captured in a viral video, sparked online outrage—particularly after footage surfaced showing her in a vulnerable state, with her clothing torn.
The minister condemned the leak, ordering disciplinary action against Ibom Air personnel responsible for releasing the clip. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and several advocacy groups criticized the handling of the case, calling it heavy-handed and demeaning.

In a significant reversal, Keyamo confirmed that the government had persuaded Ibom Air to withdraw its complaint and asked the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to lift Emmanson’s lifetime flight ban.
“When she gave her statement to police in the presence of her lawyer, she expressed great remorse for her actions,” Keyamo said, noting that both passengers and airline staff bore responsibility for the escalation.
The move is seen as a step toward restoring public trust in aviation security procedures, while also addressing calls for balanced, humane handling of passenger disputes.

Keyamo emphasized that while unruly passenger behavior remains unacceptable, airline staff must also adhere strictly to protocol. He described the episode as an opportunity to educate the travelling public on airport rules and passenger rights.
With the legal case dropped, Emmanson is expected to be released from Kirikiri prison this week. The AON will soon release full details of the agreement leading to the lifting of her flight ban.
