Workers Threaten Nationwide Strike as Wage Battle Intensifies; NLC Says ₦100,000 Is Not Enough

Nigeria’s labour crisis may be heading for a major showdown as the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) threatens an indefinite nationwide strike over rising insecurity, unpaid wage-related benefits, and worsening economic hardship.

The group accused the Federal Government of failing to protect workers and honour wage commitments, while also criticizing labour leaders for not taking stronger action. The FWF rejected the proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage, describing it as inadequate for today’s economic realities.

Adding fuel to the debate, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) insists that a realistic living wage should be closer to ₦1 million, citing inflation, soaring fuel prices, electricity tariffs, and the declining value of the naira.

With workers demanding better pay, governors proposing ₦100,000, and labour leaders pushing for significantly higher wages, Nigeria’s wage negotiations are entering a critical phase that could trigger industrial action if unresolved.
