Alison Madueke Seeks Court Order to Stop Diezani from Using His Name

Boom RadioNG | July 2, 2024

In a surprising development in the ongoing legal saga, Chief Alison Madueke, estranged husband of former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, has filed a motion to prevent her from using his surname. The motion was presented on Monday before a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is currently facing charges of laundering $153 million, continues to be a central figure in one of Nigeria’s most high-profile corruption cases. Despite their legal separation, she persists in using the surname of her ex-husband, a former Chief of Naval Staff and former military governor of Anambra and Imo states.

Court Petition Details

Chief Alison Madueke’s petition emphasizes that Diezani’s continued use of his name is not only misleading but also damaging to his reputation, especially given the severe allegations she faces. He is urging the court to mandate Diezani to revert to her maiden name, Agama, to avoid any potential mistaken liability.

In his petition, Madueke stated, “The respondent’s continued use of the petitioner’s first and family names poses a significant risk of legal and financial harm to the petitioner.”

Divorce and Legal Proceedings

The couple married on June 30, 1999, under the Marriage Act. However, their marriage was dissolved on April 13, 2022, by Hon. Justice A.A. Ozegya, following Diezani’s petition for divorce in 2021. Despite the legal dissolution, Diezani continues to use the name “Alison-Madueke,” which Chief Madueke contends is to deflect public scrutiny and associate him with her alleged crimes.

Madueke’s legal team argues that Diezani’s actions falsely suggest a continuing relationship, which is damaging to his image and could lead to unintended legal consequences.

Chief Alison Madueke’s request to the court marks a critical step in distancing himself from the legal controversies surrounding his ex-wife. As Diezani Alison-Madueke remains abroad amidst ongoing asset recovery efforts, this motion underscores the personal and legal complexities intertwined with Nigeria’s largest corruption scandal.
