World Athletics President Coe Highlights African Athletics Development During Visit to CAA

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe emphasized the importance of African athletics during his visit to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Council meeting in Cameroon. Coe provided updates on World Athletics initiatives, including the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, the ‘Sprint’ Netflix series, and the introduction of prize money for Olympic gold medallists.
The CAA Council meeting addressed various topics, such as safeguarding policies, event hosts, and gender leadership. Coe praised Africa’s talent pool and highlighted the continent’s hosting of over 270 events in 2024. He commended Africa’s contribution to the sport and emphasized athlete welfare.
Coe expressed satisfaction with the approval of the CAA’s safeguarding policy, emphasizing the paramount importance of athlete welfare. This aligns with World Athletics’ Safeguarding Policy, which requires area associations to adopt their own policies and procedures by the end of December 2024.

Over 20% of the US$50 million invested by World Athletics in grant funding for administration, competition, and development over a four-year cycle is allocated to Africa. The continent already boasts three athletics development centers, and efforts are being made to provide increased access to education and training in multiple languages.Coe also noted Africa’s interest in bidding for World Athletics Series events, including the World Athletics Championships, and credited Africa’s contribution to the overall success and growth of the sport.
“Africa’s significant role has contributed to the strength of our sport,” Coe concluded.
