NCDC Activate Emergency Center Due Cholera Outbreak

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced the activation of its emergency center as the death toll in the recent outbreak of cholera has risen to 53 nationwide.

This was disclosed in an update released by the agency shared on its official X platform. The statement read “Following a dynamic risk assessment of the cholera epidemiological situation which placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, we have activated the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC),” the NCDC said.

“As of 24th June 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths have been recorded across 31 states.”

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government through its commissioner of health, Tomi Coker has recorded one causalty and 25 confirmed cases of the disease in the state.

Subsequently, the Lagos state government has disclosed that the total number of suspected cases in the state has risen to 579, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa Local Government Areas (LGAs) recording the highest numbers.

Also, the death toll has risen to 29, an increase of five from the previously reported 24 fatalities according to the state commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who disclosed this at the Lagos State multi agency Briefing and update on the cholera outbreak today in Lagos state.
