Farida Badawy, a rising Egyptian table tennis star, shocked the crowd at the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos by defeating the heavily favored Manika Batra of India. The 20-year-old, ranked a lowly 331st in the world, displayed remarkable composure to upset the 28th-ranked Batra in a thrilling Women’s Singles encounter (3-2).

Playing without a coach, Badawy surprised everyone by taking a commanding 2-0 lead against the seasoned Indian player. Batra, however, displayed her experience by fighting back to tie the match at 2-2, forcing a nerve-wracking deciding game.

Throughout the final set, Badawy’s determination shone through. She built an 8-5 lead and even reached match point at 10-6. Yet, Batra refused to surrender, clawing her way back to 10-8. In the end, Badawy held her nerve and secured a historic victory (11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-8). This win marks a significant milestone in Badawy’s young international career.
