President Tinubu Approves Mandate for Office of Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action; Expands Green Economy Committee Membership

President Bola Tinubu has approved the terms of reference for the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action (SPEC) to provide clarity on its functions within the climate and green economy ecosystem. T
he SPEC has been mandated with several key responsibilities, including being the lead negotiator on climate-related matters and carbon market initiatives on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria. Additionally, it will coordinate all climate action-related activities across federal ministries, engage with international entities to advance global climate goals, and oversee the fulfillment of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The SPEC will also serve as the focal point for Nigeria’s engagement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other international meetings on climate-related and green economic matters. Furthermore, it will supervise the Energy Transition Office and oversee non-executive activities related to the operations of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).President Tinubu’s approval of the SPEC’s mandate reflects the government’s commitment to advancing climate action and green economic initiatives.
This move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s engagement in global climate negotiations and promoting sustainable economic growth. The expansion of the Green Economy Committee’s membership further underscores the administration’s dedication to addressing climate change and fostering green economic solutions.
