NDLEA Intercepts Codeine Shipment from India and Uncovers Opioids in Ladies’ Hair: Latest Seizures and Arrests

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant interceptions and arrests related to drug trafficking, including the seizure of a large consignment of codeine and the uncovering of opioids concealed in ladies’ hair extensions. These recent developments highlight the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat the international drug trade.

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the agency intercepted a shipment of 175,000 bottles of codeine imported from India. This seizure follows a similar interception of 175,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup at the Port Harcourt Ports complex in Onne, Rivers state, just a week prior.

The latest seizure, weighing 26,250kg, was made during a joint examination by NDLEA, Customs Service, and other security agencies.

The consignment, marked HASU 4787890 from India, was en route to a C to C bonded terminal in Enugu.In addition to the codeine interception, NDLEA officers also intercepted five different parcels containing illicit drugs concealed in ladies’ clothes and synthetic hair.

The seized drugs, including 620 ampoules of pentazocine injection, promethazine, and other opioids, were intended for shipment to the United States and United Kingdom.

These interceptions demonstrate the agency’s vigilance in preventing the international trafficking of narcotics.The NDLEA’s proactive operations also led to several arrests across different states in Nigeria.

These arrests included the apprehension of individuals in possession of various illicit substances, such as diazepam, cannabis, tramadol, and codeine-based syrup.

The agency’s continued efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking are evident in its operations and arrests in Kebbi, Gombe, Benue, Kogi, Kaduna, Oyo, Yobe, Bauchi, and the Federal Capital Territory.The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the officers and men for their diligent efforts in the arrests and seizures. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum in the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities and drug supply reduction efforts.
