President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a significant announcement during the commissioning of various projects in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark his one year in office. The Northern Parkway road in Abuja has been renamed as the Professor Wole Soyinka Highway, in honor of the renowned Nigerian literary icon, Wole Soyinka.

This decision pays tribute to Soyinka’s exceptional contributions to African literature and his historic achievement as the first sub-Saharan African to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. During the event, President Tinubu expressed his admiration for the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, commending his outstanding performance and dedication to completing legacy projects in the FCT.

This move follows President Tinubu’s recent commendation of Wike, where the Southern Parkway (S8/S9) was renamed as Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way in his honor. President Tinubu lauded Wike as a team leader and “Mr. Project,” acknowledging his commitment to the development of the FCT.

Proffesor Wole Soyinka

The renaming of the Northern Parkway road after Wole Soyinka and the reciprocal gesture of renaming the Southern Parkway after President Tinubu reflect the recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to literature and infrastructure development, respectively. This symbolic gesture not only celebrates the literary legacy of Wole Soyinka but also underscores the commitment to honoring individuals who have left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s cultural and literary landscape.
