In a significant move to address the rising insecurity in Nigeria, the Speakers of the 36 State Houses of Assembly have endorsed the creation of state police. This endorsement was made during their meeting in Abuja, where they urged the National Assembly to include the proposal for state police in the ongoing constitutional amendment process. The Speakers, under the aegis of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, also called on President Bola Tinubu to implement further measures to alleviate the current economic hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of the fuel subsidy and other economic policies.

In a communique signed by Adebo Ogundoyin, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, the group expressed their readiness to approve a bill on the creation of state police if it is included in the constitution review. The communique stated, “The Conference strongly advocates for state policing to check the negative trend of insecurity in our country. To achieve this, the Conference appeals to the National Assembly, Presidency, and other relevant stakeholders to leverage the ongoing constitution review exercise.”

The Speakers acknowledged the President’s courage in implementing economic policies such as the removal of the petroleum product subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate. However, they noted that the unintended consequences of these policies have been harsh on the populace.

They also appealed to political leaders in Rivers State to resolve the ongoing conflict between the Legislative and Executive Arms of government through peaceful means. Stay tuned to Boom Radio NG for more updates on this developing story and other significant news affecting Nigeria.
