Nigerian Telcos Seek Upward Review of Tariffs

Boom RadioNG | April 25, 2024

Telecoms operators in the country including the popular MTN, Airtel and Globacom are mulling the idea of a cost-reflective tariff in view of the current economic realities.

This was contained in a statement jointly released today by the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and co-signed by their respective chairmen, Gbenga Adebayo; and Tony Emoekpere.

In the statement, the Telcos called upon the government to take a decisive action in addressing the numerous challenges confronting the industry.

For instance, they said telecommunications infrastructure development requires substantial investments in network expansion, maintenance, and technology upgrades and there hasn’t been an upward review in pricing in 11 years primarily due to regulatory constraints.

They then called upon the government to facilitate a constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to address pricing challenges and establish a framework that balances consumers’ affordability with operators’ financial viability.
