Boom RadioNG | April 23, 2024

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken action against a Chinese supermarket located in the Federal Capital Territory for alleged discrimination against Nigerians. The supermarket has been accused of restricting entry exclusively to individuals of Chinese descent, as shown in a viral video that sparked public outrage.

Mrs. Boladale Adeyinka, the Director of Surveillance and Investigation at the FCCPC, confirmed the initiation of an investigation in response to the video. The commission has summoned the owner, Cindy Liun Bien, to appear before them on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 11 am. Failure to comply may result in further regulatory measures, including the sealing of the premises.

It is important to note that the supermarket was initially established to cater to the needs of co-tenants in the area and was not intended to exclusively serve Chinese residents. The estate assistant Facilities Manager confirmed that there is no agreement restricting access based on nationality.

The FCCPC remains committed to protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers and promoting fair competition in the marketplace.
