Nigeria’s Tunde Onakoya’s Quest To Break Guiness World Record Receives Massive support

Tunde Onakoya is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon without losing a game for 58 hours in the heart of Times Square, New York City. Tunde is playing to raise 1 million dollars to expand access to chess education for millions of children globally.

Update: Presidential Candidate at last year’s general elections in Nigeria, Activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, showed up “In Living colour” at the Times square to support Tunde




It was not just all about Playing chess and raising money, When Nigerians comes through, you it’s time to unwind



And past the 40 hour mark, that party continued:


It wasnt all fun and games, Tunde got really ill and he almost quit, But he dug in deep and decided to continue for the KIds:

Tunde and the entire crew even had to relocate to another part of Times square:


The Journey of 58 hours begins with one move, we are now close to the 57 hour mark, which means the old record is already gone (subject to ratification by Guiness World Record).




What a feeling, what a moment to be a live! 58 hours done and dusted, the time difference did not matter to Nigeria, they stayed up all night to watch it happen live, there were watch parties organised and Nigerians showed up Big Time.




Only football had this type of power over Nigerian, But thanks to Tunde Onakoya for using Chess as a tool to “reunite” Nigerians.




Then came the accolades, from all over, this feat also came with a media frenzy with all the Major global media pltaforms carrying this huge story.




Tunde didn’t stop playing when he hit the 58 hour mark, he kept on till he got to the 60 hour mark. Now we wait for confirnmation from the good folks at the Guiness World Record, the accolades are still pouring in, we just hope and pray this leads to more donations for Tunde Onakoya’s cause.
