The Labour Party (LP) has refuted claims by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) regarding the party’s leadership. In a statement issued today, the LP addressed recent “misinformation” surrounding the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

NLC Involvement Deemed Unconstitutional

The statement asserts that the NLC lacks the authority to influence the LP’s leadership. The dismissal of the current NWC, led by Comrade Julius Abure, is declared “invalid” as it occurred during an “illegal assembly.”

The LP specifically criticizes the NLC’s Political Commission, led by Comrade Joe Ajaero. The statement claims this commission has no power to convene meetings or make decisions impacting the party. The LP suggests the NLC’s actions are motivated by “personal political ambitions” and alignment with the government.

Alleged Power Grab Attempts Denied

The statement dismisses recent attempts to “usurp” the LP’s leadership. These attempts include the introduction of an “unexistent Board of Trustees” and “staged stakeholders’ meetings” with former members and non-members. The LP emphasizes that these efforts lack any legitimacy under the party’s constitution.

Focus on Electoral Success and Legal Action

The LP reaffirms the legitimacy of its recent national convention in Nnewi and the NWC elected there. The statement credits the Abure-led NWC with transforming the LP into a “national brand” that has achieved electoral success.

While emphasizing its commitment to democratic principles, the LP urges its supporters to remain calm. The statement concludes by expressing the party’s willingness to pursue legal action if necessary and its openness to collaboration with genuine party members “for the betterment of Nigeria.”
