Atiku Abubakar Criticizes Electricity Tariff Hike, Warns of Economic Hardship

Boom RadioNG | April 6, 2024

Atiku Abubakar has voiced his concerns over the recent increase in electricity tariff by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Council (NERC), warning that it will exacerbate the economic challenges faced by citizens.

The hike primarily affects Band A consumers, who receive a minimum of 20 hours of daily power supply, aiming to eliminate subsidies on electricity. However, Atiku believes this move will add to the economic burdens in a country grappling with high inflation rates.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, Atiku emphasized the existing hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and currency devaluation, suggesting that the government has not adequately addressed these issues before implementing the electricity tariff hike.

He highlighted the potential adverse effects on the manufacturing sector, citing increased operational costs, loan interest rates, and wage expenses due to the new minimum wage policy.

Atiku questioned the effectiveness of tariff increases in addressing the sector’s challenges, advocating for a reevaluation of the privatization process that led to the establishment of Distribution Companies (DISCOs).

He urged for a more strategic approach to reforms, emphasizing the need to mitigate the impact on citizens and hold regulatory bodies like NERC accountable for improving service delivery in the power sector.
