South African footballer shot dead in carjacking incident

Kaizer chiefs defender, Luke Fleurs was shot dead on Wednesday night in a carjacking incident.

His death was confirmed today by his club in a statement. It said “It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” Kaizer Chiefs stated.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“The SAPS (South African Police Service) are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.

“May his dear soul rest in peace.”

 It was gathered that in Johannesburg suburb of Florida, while the 24-year-old  waiting to be attended to at the petrol station, unknown gunmen approached him and he was killed in the process.

One of the suspects is reported to have fled the scene with the deceased car after the shooting.

The south african footballer was born in Cape Town and made his National First Division debut aged 17 and made 18 league appearances in his first season of professional football.

He signed for SuperSport United on a long-term deal in summer 2018 but then joined fellow Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year.

He featured for South Africa’s U-17 team and made five appearances in 2016.

Then in 2021, he represented South Africa U-23 side and played in four games.
