The Labour Party finds itself embroiled in a crisis following the re-election of Julius Abure as the National Chairman during the recent national convention. The chief spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign organisation, Yinusa Tanko, has revealed that this crisis could have been avoided if the party’s leadership had heeded the advice of Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

Tanko highlighted that Obi had suggested a more inclusive approach for the convention, emphasizing the need for wider consultations with stakeholders, including the TUC, NLC, and the Obidient group. Despite Obi’s efforts to intervene and provide ideas for improvement, the convention was not conducted in an all-inclusive manner as initially agreed upon. This deviation from the agreed process has led to discontent within the party.

While Abure has the right to contest the national chairmanship position, Tanko stressed the importance of opening the door for more individuals to be part of the process. The convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, did not conform to the agreed-upon inclusive approach, making it unacceptable to a significant portion of the party.

Regarding the potential impact on Obi in the next election, Tanko expressed confidence in Obi’s brand and stated that he and others would continue to support him wherever he goes.

The controversy surrounding Abure’s re-election has drawn attention, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) calling for his resignation and the immediate constitution of a caretaker transition committee to organize a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not monitor the convention, and the party’s Board of Trustees has asserted that Abure’s tenure had expired.
