This incident coincides with a period of significant economic hardship in Nigeria. Inflation reached a staggering 29.90% in January, with the cost of living skyrocketing since President Tinubu’s decision to end fuel subsidies. The subsequent floating of the naira further exacerbated the situation, leading to nationwide protests.

Government Intervention and Continued Frustration

The government attempted to mitigate the impact of these reforms by introducing palliatives and other measures. However, these efforts appear to have had little effect. The recent nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) highlight the continued frustration with the government’s response to the economic crisis.

President Tinubu Calls for Patience

Despite the public outcry, President Tinubu maintains his stance on the reforms, urging Nigerians to be patient and allow the changes to take effect. He insists there is “no going back” on these measures, raising concerns about the potential for further social unrest.
