Nigeria’s Bakers Threaten Nationwide Strike: Unfulfilled Promises & Rising Costs Push Industry to the Brink

Boom RadioNG | February 13, 2024

Prepare for disruptions in bakery services nationwide as the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria declares an imminent strike starting February 27. This decision stems from the Federal government’s failure to fulfill its promises made to the association back in 2020.

The association demands immediate implementation of financial support palliatives for bakers, pledged by the Federal Government as part of post-COVID-19 support programs for Small and Medium Enterprises. Additionally, they call for the suspension of all forms of taxation on the bakery industry at federal, state, and local government levels.

According to Alhaji Mansur Umar, the National President of AMBCON, the decision to withdraw services is a response to the skyrocketing prices of baking materials, including flour, sugar, yeast, and vegetable oil, driven by subsidy removal and forex deregulation. Multiple taxations and increased business costs further exacerbate the situation, compelling the association to take action.

Among the association’s demands are the liberalization of flour and sugar importation, reduction or removal of import duties on major baking materials, and provision of concessionary forex exchange to stakeholders. They also advocate for the development of wheat and sugar cane cultivation and processing within Nigeria and the removal of multiple taxations.

To address these concerns and enhance the ease of doing business, the association urges the government to establish a price control and monitoring committee and implement favorable conditions outlined in the constitution.
