The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared the inevitability of a ban on certain plastic materials, urging citizens to embrace a “wholistic circular management of our waste.” This announcement comes in response to the recent ban by the Lagos State Government on Styrofoam and other single-use plastics, a move hailed by the Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, as a strong signal for comprehensive action.

Minister Salako revealed that the Federal Ministry of Environment has inaugurated an interagency committee for extensive consultations across government, businesses, and stakeholders to formulate a sustainable solution aligned with Nigeria’s environmental sustainability agenda.

Emphasizing the need for addressing the poorly regulated use of plastics, Salako advised Nigerians to prepare for imminent changes, including the prospective banning of certain plastic products. In the interim, citizens are encouraged to adopt personal environmental actions, such as reducing and reusing plastics, while also exploring the expanding market for plastic waste recycling.

To prepare the public for these changes, the government plans to launch robust awareness campaigns and sensitization initiatives in the coming days. The ultimate goal is the comprehensive and circular management of waste in the country.
