Glass Ceiling Shattered: Rebecca Welch Blazes the Trail as First Female Referee in Premier League History

Boom RadioNG | December 23, 2023

Rebecca Welch etched her name in history as the first female referee in an English Premier League football match during the Fulham versus Burnley game at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Welch, a 40-year-old from Washington in northeast England, started her refereeing journey in 2010 while working for the National Health Service. Over the years, she climbed the officiating ranks, achieving significant milestones. In 2021, Welch became the first woman to referee a match in the English Football League, presiding over the fourth-tier fixture between Harrogate and Port Vale.

Her groundbreaking achievements didn’t stop there. Welch went on to become the first female official to referee matches in the Championship and the third round of the FA Cup. Last month, she added another milestone by serving as the first woman fourth official in a Premier League game during Fulham’s match against Manchester United.
