Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has regained his freedom from the Kuje Correctional Centre after fulfilling his bail requirements. Emefiele, facing charges of alleged procurement fraud, was released on Friday, December 22, 2023. The spokesperson for the Kuje Correctional Centre, Adamu Duza, confirmed Emefiele’s release, stating that he had met the N300 million bail conditions.

Emefiele’s bail, granted by the Federal Capital Territory High Court Abuja, required two sureties with certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama District of Abuja. The former CBN governor was also instructed to deposit his travel documents with the court registrar and remain within the Abuja Municipal Area Council. Despite objections from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the judge ruled in favor of Emefiele, dismissing concerns about flight risk or jeopardizing the investigation.
