In a significant move towards decongesting custodial centers nationwide, the Federal Government has released 150 inmates from the Maximum Custodial Centre in Kano State. Facilitated by the Presidential Committee on Decongestion and Reform of Custodial Centres, this release addresses the pressing issue of overcrowding, a major challenge in Nigeria’s prison system.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, spearheaded the initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to humane and efficient custodial systems. The released individuals, carefully selected based on eligibility criteria, including serving a substantial portion of their sentences or facing extended trial periods, are encouraged to reintegrate into society positively.
