“NLC and TUC Declare Nationwide Strike in Response to Attack on Ajaero

Sola Rogers | November 3, 2023

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), the two largest labor unions in Nigeria, have declared a nationwide strike in response to the attack on Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC.

The strike is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 30, 2023, and will affect all sectors of the economy. The NLC and TUC have called on all workers to join the strike in protest of the attack on Ajaero and the government’s failure to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians.

Ajaero was attacked by unknown gunmen on his way to work on Monday, August 29, 2023. He was shot and injured, and his car was vandalized. The attack has been condemned by the NLC, TUC, and other labor unions.

The NLC and TUC have said that the strike will continue until the government addresses their demands, which include:

  • The immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the attack on Ajaero.
  • A compensation package for Ajaero and his family.
  • A review of the minimum wage.
  • A reduction in the price of fuel and other essential commodities.
  • An improvement in the security situation in the country.

The nationwide strike is expected to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy. The NLC and TUC have a combined membership of over 40 million workers. The strike is expected to disrupt transportation, communication, energy, and other sectors of the economy.

The Nigerian government has called on the NLC and TUC to suspend the strike and to resume negotiations. The government has said that it is committed to addressing the concerns of the labor unions, but that it needs time to do so.

The NLC and TUC have said that they are willing to negotiate with the government, but that they will not back down on their demands. The strike is expected to continue until the government meets the unions’ demands.
