Court Orders Kano Govt to Pay N30bn for Demolitions, Largest Award Ever

Sola Rogers | November 2, 2023

A Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the Kano State government to pay N30 billion in compensation to victims of demolitions carried out by the state government in recent months. The court gave the government seven days to comply with the order, failing which the court will take further steps.

The court’s decision is a major victory for the victims of the demolitions, who have been demanding compensation from the government for months. The demolitions displaced thousands of people and destroyed businesses and homes.

The court’s order is also a significant rebuke to the Kano State government, which has been accused of carrying out the demolitions without due process.

The government has argued that the demolitions were necessary to remove illegal structures from the state, but the court has ruled that the government’s actions were unlawful and that the victims are entitled to compensation.

The court’s order is a reminder that the government cannot simply demolish people’s homes and businesses without following the law. The government must respect the rights of its citizens and provide compensation to those who are affected by its actions.

The N30 billion compensation award is one of the largest ever awarded by a Nigerian court for demolitions. It is a significant victory for the victims and a warning to the government that it cannot violate the rights of its citizens with impunity.
