Canada Bans WeChat and Kaspersky from Government Devices

Sola Rogers | November 1, 2023

Canada has banned the use of the Chinese messaging app WeChat and the Russian cybersecurity software Kaspersky on government devices, citing national security concerns. The ban, which took effect on October 30, 2023, applies to all mobile and desktop devices used by government employees.

The Canadian government has stated that the ban is necessary to protect government networks and data from potential cyberattacks. WeChat and Kaspersky are both owned by companies that are subject to the laws of their respective countries, which means that the Canadian government does not have the ability to oversee their operations or access their data.

The ban has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have praised the government for taking steps to protect national security, while others have criticized the ban as being unnecessary and discriminatory.
