16-Year-Old Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria’s First Gold at Commonwealth Fencing Championships
Nigeria has celebrated a landmark moment in fencing after 16-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson won the country’s first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.
Esiovwa-Thompson produced a commanding performance in the men’s U-23 epee event on Sunday, August 9, at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Victoria Island, defeating India’s Asian champion Lokesh Vemani 15–5 in the final.
The victory was particularly significant because it was Esiovwa-Thompson’s first appearance for Nigeria after switching sporting allegiance from England.
Teenager dominates road to historic gold
The young Nigerian was unbeaten from the beginning of the competition.
Competing in Pool 4, Esiovwa-Thompson won all his group bouts to finish top of the pool and earn a bye into the round of 16.
He then defeated South Africa’s Karabo Mathobela 15–7 before producing an even more emphatic performance against India’s Shivaansh Kapoor, winning the quarter-final 15–2.
The semi-final presented a tougher challenge against another Indian opponent, Ashwini Shaurya. With the home crowd behind him, Esiovwa-Thompson maintained his composure to secure a 15–11 victory and book his place in the final.
Against Vemani, he delivered perhaps his most impressive performance of the tournament, winning 15–5 to secure the gold medal.

A historic first for Nigeria
The triumph puts Esiovwa-Thompson firmly into Nigerian sporting history.
He is the first Nigerian to win a medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships and the first Nigerian to win gold at an international fencing event, according to the supplied competition record.
His achievement also comes at a significant time for Nigerian fencing, with Lagos hosting the Commonwealth Championships for the first time on African soil.
Esiovwa-Thompson’s success is the latest chapter in a promising young career. Before switching allegiance to Nigeria, he represented England internationally and won gold in the boys’ U-13 epee at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge. He also won bronze in the cadet men’s epee team event in Naples.

More medals at the Lagos championships
Esiovwa-Thompson was not the only young fencer making an impression in Lagos.
England’s Oliver Strange claimed the first gold medal of the championships in the men’s U-23 foil, defeating India’s Manoj Patil in the final. India’s Singh Sanasam and England’s Thomas James took the bronze medals.
With athletes from more than 20 countries competing across the championships, Nigeria’s hosting of the event is providing local athletes with an opportunity to compete against leading fencers from across the Commonwealth.
For Esiovwa-Thompson, however, the focus is already on what his historic victory could mean for the future. At just 16, he has shown that Nigerian fencing has a new generation capable of competing—and winning—on the international stage.
His gold medal is not just a personal breakthrough. It is a milestone that could inspire more young Nigerians to pick up a foil, sabre or epee and see fencing as a pathway to international sporting success.
