Senate Passes State Police Bill: Governors to Appoint Commissioners as Nigeria Moves Toward Major Security Reform

Boom RadioNG | June 24, 2026

Nigeria’s Senate has passed a landmark constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish State Police Services, marking one of the biggest security reforms since the return to democracy.

The proposed legislation introduces a dual policing system, allowing states to operate their own police services alongside the Federal Police. Under the bill, state governors will have the power to appoint Commissioners of Police, subject to confirmation by their respective State Houses of Assembly.

To prevent abuse, the bill includes safeguards protecting political opponents, activists, journalists, and citizens from unlawful arrests or intimidation. It also outlines conditions under which the Federal Government can intervene if a state’s security situation deteriorates beyond local control.

The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s push for state policing as a solution to rising insecurity, kidnappings, and other security challenges across the country. Supporters believe the reform will improve local intelligence gathering and speed up responses to crime, while critics remain concerned about potential political interference and funding issues.

If fully approved, the legislation could reshape Nigeria’s security architecture and significantly strengthen grassroots policing nationwide.
