A viral social media post claiming Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre was excluded from Nigeria’s WAFCON squad due to alleged corruption has been exposed as fake, sparking fresh concerns about misinformation and impersonation online.

The controversial posts, shared from a fraudulent Facebook account posing as Plumptre, accused unnamed officials of corruption and even threatened retirement from international football. However, sports journalist Pooja Media and several others quickly pointed out that Plumptre does not own or operate a Facebook account.

Plumptre reportedly confirmed the account is fake, while journalist Dr. Victor Ademola warned fans to remain vigilant against scammers using the footballer’s identity. Former Super Falcons Media Officer Oluchi Tobe-Chukwu also criticized media outlets that published the unverified claims, stressing that journalism must begin with proper verification.
