In a landmark moment for African football, Somali referee Omar Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa on August 12 in Salzburg.
The 34-year-old official, a FIFA-listed referee since 2018 and CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025, continues his remarkable rise after officiating major continental fixtures, including the CAF Champions League final.
Artan was originally selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup officiating team but was unable to participate due to entry restrictions into the United States.
