US Escalates Pressure on Cuba After Raul Castro Indictment

Washington has intensified its stance on Cuba, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio declaring that the United States is “laser-focused” on dismantling Havana’s communist system. The warning follows the shock indictment of former Cuban president Raul Castro, tied to the 1996 downing of civilian planes flown by anti-Castro pilots.

Rubio, a Cuban American and outspoken critic of Havana, branded Cuba a “failed state” amid crippling economic collapse, power outages, and runaway inflation. He stressed that while the U.S. prefers a diplomatic solution, President Donald Trump has “other options” available, underscored by the deployment of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to the Caribbean.

The U.S. has offered Cuba $100 million in aid in exchange for reforms, but insists on bypassing the military-run conglomerate GAESA, recently sanctioned by Washington. Meanwhile, Cuban authorities have called for mass protests outside the U.S. embassy in Havana, denouncing the indictment as a political attack.
