What began in 1981 as a bold reclamation of 11.7 hectares from the Lagos Lagoon has become a 21st-century learning hub. On Thursday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu unveiled the Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle—a sprawling educational city comprising 36 public schools, fulfilling what he called a “sacred promise” to the children of “AJ City.”
Today, the Tolu Schools Complex in Olodi-Apapa, Ajegunle was officially commissioned — a massive regeneration project featuring 36 schools and 19 mini football pitches.
The Lagos State Government has unveiled the Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle—a sprawling 11.7-hectare educational hub comprising 36 public schools: 31 secondary and five primary schools in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the commissioning event attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio (representing President Bola Tinubu) and Education Minister Tunji Alausa, described the project as “a full reimagining of what public education should look like in a modern African city like Lagos.”

“Fulfilling a Covenant”
“Today, here in Ajegunle—’AJ City’—we are not merely commissioning a set of buildings; we are fulfilling a covenant,” Sanwo-Olu said. “This is a sacred promise between the government and the people: that no child, regardless of where they are born, shall be denied the dignity of a world-class education.”

A Brief History
The Tolu Schools Complex was first established in 1981 under former Lagos Governor Lateef Jakande, who reclaimed 11.73 hectares from the Lagos Lagoon. During Tinubu’s tenure as governor (1999–2003), he constructed the Bola Ige Millennium Secondary School on the site. The latest renovation began in early 2024.

Reactions
