Nigeria’s police leadership is undergoing a strategic overhaul. Inspector-General Olatunji Rilwan Disu has approved sweeping changes to the Force’s communication architecture, appointing seasoned administrator DCP Anthony Okon Placid as the new Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO) and CSP Ali Giwa to pioneer the newly created New Media Office.

The New Voice: DCP Anthony Okon Placid

Placid isn’t new to high-stakes communication. The 54-year-old Akwa Ibom native brings three decades of multi-disciplinary experience spanning operations, intelligence, international peacekeeping, and strategic training.
His credentials read like a roadmap of modern policing: United Nations missions in Darfur, African Union operations in Sudan, election security advisory roles, and command positions across six Nigerian states. A 1998 Police Academy graduate, Placid holds advanced degrees in Geography, Law and Diplomacy, and is a certified expert in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.
His recent induction into the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (mni) in December 2024 signals the strategic weight IGP Disu places on this appointment.

The Digital Pivot: CSP Ali Giwa

Parallel to Placid’s traditional PR role, Disu is betting big on digital transformation. CSP Ali Giwa, a cybersecurity specialist with 15+ years in law enforcement, now leads the Force’s first dedicated New Media Office.
Giwa’s portfolio is distinctly 21st-century: cybercrime investigation, public order management, and digital strategy. His previous stints at the National Cybercrime Centre and as Lagos Command’s Deputy PRO position him to modernize police-citizen engagement.

Why This Matters

These appointments reflect Disu’s broader reform agenda—professionalizing police communication for an era of instant scrutiny. By separating traditional media relations (Placid) from digital strategy (Giwa), the Force is building specialized capacity to manage both legacy press and social media narratives.
The outgoing Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed both appointments Sunday, marking a new chapter in Nigeria’s law enforcement communication.
