“Not Welcome”: Marseille Mayor Moves to Block Kanye West’s June Concert Over Nazi Imagery

Tensions are rising in Marseille after Mayor Benoit Payan declared that rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye, is “not welcome” in the city ahead of his scheduled June 11 concert at the Vélodrome Stadium.

The 24-time Grammy winner has faced global backlash in recent years over racist and anti-Semitic remarks, including the release of a controversial track titled “Heil Hitler.” Payan said he would not allow Marseille to become “a showcase for hatred and unabashed Nazism,” reflecting growing political and public opposition to the show.

However, French law limits the ability of local authorities to block performances unless public order or criminal violations are clearly anticipated. Organisers, Mars 360, say strict contractual clauses have been included to ensure compliance with French law during the event.
