Labour Party 2.0: Governor Alex Otti Leads Massive Rebuilding After Peter Obi’s Exit

The Labour Party (LP) is officially entering a new era of restructuring. Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, announced on Saturday that the party has formally notified INEC of its plans to hold nationwide congresses and a national convention in March 2026.

This move signals a decisive shift toward internal consolidation as the party seeks to move past recent leadership crises and high-profile departures.

The “Obi Effect” and the Path Forward

Addressing the elephant in the room, Governor Otti expressed regret over the exit of former presidential candidate Peter Obi. While acknowledging the loss of key figures and National Assembly members to defections, Otti remained resolute about the party’s future.

“We regret the exit of Mr. Peter Obi… while we regret it, I wish him well. However, we have resolved that the party should come together and become a stronger force,” Otti stated.

• Member Revalidation: A committee has been inaugurated to revalidate existing members and register new ones ahead of the March congresses.

• Peace Overtures: Otti called on former National Chairman Julius Abure to drop ongoing litigation and join stakeholders in rebuilding the party.

• No Coalitions: The Governor clarified that the LP is not seeking any political mergers, focusing strictly on “institutional rebuilding.”

• FCT Elections Pass: Due to the tight restructuring schedule, the party will not participate in the February FCT Area Council elections.

The meeting featured a “united front” including Caretaker Committee Chair Senator Nenadi Usman, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, and representatives from the NLC and TUC. The goal is clear: transform the Labour Party from a 2023 “movement” into a permanent, structured political institution.
