The Northern Nigerian music scene is in mourning following the sudden and shocking death of renowned traditional musician John Zuya, popularly known by his stage name John Mai Molo, who reportedly died from suspected food poisoning in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

According to multiple reports, the much-loved performer—celebrated for his deep cultural lyrics and mastery of traditional rhythms—had just returned from Lagos on October 16, 2025, after an impressive string of performances at major cultural events. His return home was meant to be a short rest after weeks of touring, but tragedy struck shortly after he ate a meal allegedly laced with poison.

Eyewitnesses revealed that John Mai Molo suddenly fell ill and collapsed, prompting his friends to rush him to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi. Sadly, doctors confirmed his passing upon arrival.

A close friend and fellow musician, Emma Wakili, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook early Saturday, October 18, 2025, stating that the late musician died around 7:00 a.m. “This is a painful loss to all of us who knew him—not just as an artist, but as a brother and cultural treasure,” Wakili wrote.

Authorities have since placed his remains in the ATBUTH mortuary, where an autopsy is being conducted to determine the true cause of death. Meanwhile, local police have reportedly opened an investigation into the alleged poisoning, as tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria.

A Pillar of Northern Folk Music

John Mai Molo was more than a singer—he was a custodian of Hausa traditional music, known for blending ancient sounds with modern influences. Over the years, his performances earned him widespread acclaim and a devoted fanbase both within and outside Nigeria.
His death leaves a significant void in the Northern entertainment industry, especially among younger musicians who saw him as a mentor and cultural ambassador.

Tributes Pour In

Since the news broke, fans, musicians, and cultural figures have flooded social media with emotional tributes. Many described John Mai Molo as a “voice of tradition” and “a bridge between generations.”
Cultural promoters have also called on the Bauchi State Government to honor his legacy through a posthumous award or annual festival celebrating traditional music.

Ongoing Investigation

While details remain unclear, local sources suggest that the authorities are not ruling out foul play, given the suddenness of his illness.
Medical officials are expected to release autopsy results soon, which may provide clarity on whether the poisoning was accidental or deliberate.
