President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive for the immediate launch of a free healthcare initiative targeting low-income retirees under Nigeria’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). Framing it as a core element of social security and dignity in retirement, the President emphasized the urgency of safeguarding Nigeria’s aging population.

In a significant push for pension reform, President Tinubu also ordered the fast-tracked implementation of long-delayed pension increases and the enforcement of a minimum pension guarantee. These measures are designed to protect the most vulnerable pensioners and ensure that no retiree is left behind.

The President’s directives came following a briefing by Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom). During the session, he reiterated the importance of dignity and financial security for retired police officers, instructing PenCom to urgently resolve lingering issues around the police pension scheme.

In her update, the PenCom DG also highlighted ongoing initiatives to preserve the value of pension funds amid inflation, and announced plans to introduce foreign currency pension contributions—a move aimed at allowing Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the scheme.
