Lagos Issues Urgent Flood Alert Amid Heavy Rains: Government Warns Residents to Stay Indoors, Avoid Flooded Roads

As torrential rains pounded Lagos for over 12 hours, the Lagos State Government has issued an urgent public safety advisory, urging residents to remain calm and avoid wading through floodwaters. This follows a fresh weather alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), predicting more heavy rains and thunderstorms over the next three days.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing that while Lagos has invested heavily in resilient flood-control infrastructure, the city’s coastal geography and rising water levels make it vulnerable to flash flooding—especially during extreme weather conditions.

High Tide, Heavy Floods: A Tidal Lock Risk

Wahab explained that tidal lock—a condition caused by rising lagoon levels—could temporarily prevent drainage collectors from discharging runoff effectively. As a result, areas adjacent to rivers and lagoons, particularly low-lying communities, face the greatest risk of high-current flash floods.

“The lagoon level is rising, and with the peculiar nature of Lagos as a coastal city, discharge from collectors is temporarily hindered,” Wahab said.

Stay Safe: Government’s Do’s and Don’ts During Flooding

The Commissioner stressed the importance of public caution, especially for parents and guardians. Given the ongoing school holidays, Wahab warned against allowing children to play outside or swim in rainwater or flood channels.

He reiterated the dangers of attempting to drive or walk through flooded streets, noting that vehicles could be submerged and people swept away in the forceful currents.

Additionally, he issued a stern warning to residents who dispose of refuse into open drains during rainstorms:

“Dumping waste in drainage channels during rainfall is irresponsible and dangerous. These actions block waterways and exacerbate flooding.”

Ongoing Drainage Maintenance and Urban Flood Control Efforts

Wahab reassured the public that the state government is intensifying year-round drainage maintenance, cleaning existing channels, and awarding contracts for concrete lining of new drainage systems to manage runoff more efficiently.

“These floods require all hands on deck. Lagosians must partner with the government by being vigilant, responsible, and safety-conscious.”
