Unstoppable D’Tigress Honoured with OON, $100K and Homes After Historic 5th AfroBasket Title

Nigeria’s phenomenal women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has received national honours and financial rewards after clinching their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, solidifying their dominance on the African basketball scene.

In recognition of their historic achievement, President Bola Tinubu conferred on the team members the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) national award. Each player was also gifted the naira equivalent of $100,000 and a fully furnished flat. The gesture, announced during a reception held on Monday in Abuja, reflects the government’s appreciation for the team’s excellence and enduring success.

The reception was attended by First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu, who stood in for the President, and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Technical crew members led by Coach Rena Wakama were also awarded $50,000 each.

A New Era of Recognition for Women’s Sports

This marks the second time in weeks that the Tinubu administration has rewarded women’s teams; just recently, the Super Falcons received similar national honours for winning the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

D’Tigress: A Dynasty of Dominance

The Nigerian women sealed their place in AfroBasket history by defeating Mali 78–64 in the final showdown. The win marked their seventh overall AfroBasket title and extended their winning streak to 29 consecutive games, an unbeaten run dating back to 2015.

Though the game started slow for Nigeria, the team’s composure and resilience began to shine in the second quarter, closing the half level at 41–41. Standout performances by Ezinne Kalu (20 points) and Amy Okonkwo (19 points) were instrumental in turning the tide.

The third quarter proved pivotal as D’Tigress stepped up defensively, outscoring Mali 20–15. Key contributions also came from Promise Amukamara, Victoria Macaulay, and Musa, who added 9 points and 4 rebounds.
