Nigeria Emerges as Africa’s Rising Star in Global Fencing Arena
In a landmark endorsement of Nigeria’s growing sporting reputation, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) has spotlighted the country as a key destination for future international fencing competitions. This follows the triumphant hosting of the 23rd African Fencing Championships at Charterhouse Lagos from June 25 to 29.
FIE Secretary General Gulnora Saidova, during her inaugural visit to the continent, applauded Nigeria’s impeccable execution of the event—from state-of-the-art venues to exceptional hospitality. Her experience, she said, solidified Nigeria’s potential as a pivotal hub for fencing on the world stage.
“Nigeria has truly impressed me,” Saidova shared. “From the quality of the facilities to the dedication of the organizers, it’s clear that this nation is ready to host global tournaments.”
During a high-level courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor, the FIE delegation expressed optimism over the sport’s trajectory in Nigeria. Saidova highlighted that the Lagos State Government’s enthusiasm serves as a promising pillar of long-term institutional support.
She emphasized the broader value fencing can bring—from boosting Nigeria’s Olympic medal prospects to fostering youth development nationwide. Her call to officially designate fencing a “priority sport” in Lagos State underscores a bold vision for sustainable sporting infrastructure and economic advancement.
