“Rebuilding Nigeria’s Conscience: Dr. John Momoh Challenges Media to Prioritize Truth Over Clicks at NGE 2025”
Renowned journalist and Channels Media Group Chairman, Dr. John Momoh (OON), has issued a passionate call to action for Nigerian media professionals to rise above sensationalism and recommit to truth, empathy, and nation-building.
Speaking at the 2025 Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) National Biennial Convention held in Enugu, Dr. Momoh emphasized that in a time of division and disillusionment, the media must become architects of inclusion, dialogue, and healing.
“Let’s remind ourselves that we are not just gatekeepers — we are builders of national conscience,” he charged, urging editors and newsroom leaders to pursue “truth, not clicks.”
Reframing the Media’s Mission: From Headlines to Healing
The convention’s theme, “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media,” was described by Dr. Momoh as a national conversation — not just a topic.
He dissected the key elements of the theme — dialogue, inclusion, security — with compelling urgency:

“Nation-building is not just about unity,” he said. “It’s about empathy. And healing begins with being heard.”

He challenged media professionals to create space for authentic conversations across generations, communities, and power structures, adding:
“Too many voices still go unheard — women, youth, persons with disabilities, and ethnic minorities all deserve a seat at the table.”
Enugu: A City of Memory, A Symbol of Media Legacy
Dr. Momoh reflected on Enugu’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s media history — from the birth of The Nigerian Outlook by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe to the fearless reporting during the civil war.
“Enugu carries the scars of history. It also carries the strength to heal,” he declared.
Referencing journalism legends like M.C.K. Ajuluchukwu and Uche Chukwumerije, he called on the current generation to honor that legacy by holding power to account and amplifying marginalized voices.

He praised the NGE for curating a timely and necessary convention, and urged attendees to view journalism not just as a profession, but as a mission to rebuild trust, amplify inclusion, and inspire national progress.
