Lagos is about to become the epicenter of African fencing as Egypt and Tunisia, the continent’s most dominant forces in the sport, touch down for the 23rd African Fencing Championships—set to electrify Charterhouse Lagos from June 25 to 29, 2025.

This prestigious five-day tournament will feature 12 events across both individual and team categories, with elite fencers from over a dozen African nations vying for 12 gold medals and continental bragging rights.

Egypt Leads the Charge with Olympic & World Champs

Reigning champions Egypt have arrived in full force with the largest delegation, headlined by the El-Sayed brothers—a pair redefining African fencing.

• Mohamed El-Sayed (22): Olympic bronze medallist at Paris 2024, Mediterranean Games gold winner, and the current face of Egyptian fencing.

• Mahmoud El-Sayed (19): World Junior Champion 2025, current No.1 ranked junior globally, and Egypt’s brightest young prospect.

Egypt’s team flew into Lagos on an EgyptAir charter from Cairo, signaling their serious intent to defend the continental title they claimed in 2024.

Tunisia Banks on Farès Ferjani, Other Nations Gear Up

Also arriving in Lagos is Tunisia, spearheaded by Farès Ferjani, the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist and reigning African champion in men’s sabre. At 27, Ferjani brings experience and firepower, anchoring Tunisia’s men’s team.

More fencing nations—including South Africa, Rwanda, Mauritius, Senegal, Libya, Niger, Burkina Faso, Angola, Guinea, and Morocco—are expected to arrive by June 24, just before the opening ceremony.

Charterhouse Lagos Hosts Again as Corporate Backing Grows

The event will be staged at Charterhouse Lagos, the same venue that hosted the 2024 Fencing World Cup. Its continued support underscores the growing corporate commitment to Nigeria’s sporting ecosystem.
