World Boxing Mandates Genetic Sex Testing for All Athletes in Groundbreaking ‘Sex, Age & Weight’ Policy
In a bold and controversial move, World Boxing has announced the rollout of a mandatory genetic sex testing policy for all athletes over 18 participating in its competitions. The initiative, part of a newly developed framework titled “Sex, Age and Weight”, aims to ensure fairness, safety, and competitive integrity in the sport—particularly within sex-specific boxing categories.
Why This Matters: Safety, Fairness & Scientific Certainty
Set to take effect from July 1, 2025, the policy introduces PCR-based genetic testing to confirm athletes’ sex at birth. The decision is anchored on mounting concerns about biological advantages, particularly in combat sports, and seeks to create a level playing field while safeguarding mental and physical well-being.
According to World Boxing, the PCR test will detect the SRY gene, a key marker of male chromosomes (Y chromosome). Athletes with an XX chromosomal profile or without male androgenization will be eligible to compete in the female category, while those with XY profiles and signs of male androgenization will be assigned to the male category.
This decision also places responsibility on national federations, requiring them to certify the chromosomal sex of their athletes when registering for World Boxing events. Failure to comply—or submission of falsified results—will lead to disqualification and possible disciplinary action.

Imane Khelif Case Triggers Policy Activation
The policy has already found application in the case of Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer whose eligibility for the female category at the upcoming Eindhoven Box Cup (June 5–10, 2025) was challenged. On May 30, 2025, World Boxing informed the Algerian Boxing Federation that Khelif would not be allowed to compete unless she undergoes and passes the genetic screening process.
World Boxing cited concerns around athlete safety and mental well-being, noting the heated public discourse and potential backlash Khelif’s participation might spark. While the decision does not presume the outcome of her test, it reflects the organization’s commitment to due process and safety.
The Science Behind the Policy
The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing method, commonly used in medical diagnostics, will serve as the scientific backbone of the new policy. Using a sample from saliva, blood, or swabs, the test can detect the presence or absence of Y chromosome DNA, helping to definitively establish an athlete’s biological sex.
In cases involving Differences in Sexual Development (DSD), the policy outlines further evaluations—including hormonal profiling, anatomical assessments, and consultations with independent medical specialists. Appeals and support systems will be in place for affected athletes.

With boxing reinstated in the LA28 Olympics, the organization is taking a hard stance on regulatory clarity and athlete welfare.
