Double Tragedy for Nigerian Football as 1980 AFCON Champion Charles Bassey Dies at 71
Nigerian football has been plunged into mourning once again following the death of Charles Bassey, a revered member of the historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning Green Eagles squad. His passing on Saturday, in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, came only hours after the football world was rocked by news of the death of team captain, Christian “Chairman” Chukwu.
Bassey, aged 71, succumbed to a long illness, marking a painful day of double tragedy for Nigerian football fans and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who issued a heartfelt statement in response.
“This has been a day of double tragedy, and the NFF and the entire Nigeria football fraternity are deeply saddened by the turn of events,” said Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, NFF General Secretary. “We lost ‘Chairman’ Chukwu earlier in the day; now, we have to mourn Charles Bassey. May God Almighty grant their souls eternal rest.”

Charles Bassey was one of the 22 men who etched their names into Nigerian football folklore when the Green Eagles triumphed over Algeria 3-0 at the National Stadium in Surulere on March 22, 1980. That win secured Nigeria’s first-ever AFCON title and remains one of the most iconic moments in the nation’s sporting history.
After hanging up his boots, Bassey dedicated his life to football development, coaching several clubs including Calabar Rovers, BCC Lions of Gboko, Flash Flamingoes of Benin, Mobil Pegasus (his hometown team), Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists of Bauchi. His contributions to the growth of local football were immense, and his mentorship helped shape the careers of many Nigerian talents.
Another Fallen Hero in a Growing List
Bassey’s passing brings the total number of deceased players from the 1980 squad to nine. He joins fellow legends including Best Ogedegbe, Moses Effiong, Christian Chukwu, Okechukwu Isima, Tunde Bamidele, Aloysius Atugbu, Mudashiru Lawal, and Martins Eyo.
The death of both Bassey and Chukwu on the same day is a poignant reminder of a golden generation that brought pride and unity to a nation through sport—and whose memories must be preserved for generations to come.
