A New Era for Nigerian Football Development Begins

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), under the leadership of Ibrahim Musa Gusau, is set to make history with the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a state-of-the-art Players’ Hostel and new training pitches in Abuja. Scheduled for Tuesday, the landmark event will be officiated by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas GCON.

A Game-Changer for Nigerian Football

The NFF-FIFA Players’ Hostel, a 68-room ultra-modern facility, will be strategically located within Package B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, just across from the NFF Secretariat. The hostel will feature:

  • Two separate wings (A & B)
  • 62 standard rooms
  • Four suites
  • Two executive suites

In addition to the accommodation complex, the project includes:

  • Two brand-new training pitches (one synthetic, one natural grass)
  • Reconstruction of the existing synthetic pitch
  • 1,838-seat spectator terraces
  • Fully equipped dressing rooms for players and officials

FIFA Forward 3.0: Transforming Football Infrastructure in Nigeria

This massive project is fully funded by FIFA through its FIFA Forward 3.0 program, a global initiative aimed at enhancing football development by providing financial and technical support to member associations.

Since its inception in 2016 under FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the FIFA Forward initiative has focused on three key areas:

  1. Increasing investment in football infrastructure worldwide.
  2. Implementing targeted, high-impact projects to enhance the sport’s global reach.
  3. Ensuring transparency and accountability in football development funding.

NFF President: “A Transformational Project for Our National Teams”

Speaking about the project, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed his excitement, emphasizing its long-term benefits:

“The Players’ Hostel and new training pitches mark a transformational step for Nigerian football. This initiative will not only improve team management but also cut down costs on accommodation and training facilities, allowing us to redirect more resources into grassroots football development. We are deeply grateful to FIFA for their support.”

FIFA Commends NFF’s Vision for Nigerian Football

FIFA’s Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer and Regional Director (Africa), Gelson Fernandes, praised the NFF’s approach:

“The goal of the FIFA Forward Programme is to create world-class infrastructure that accelerates football development. The NFF’s decision to upgrade its Technical Centre is a perfect example of this vision—enhancing training pitches, building modern accommodation, and creating a true home for Nigeria’s national teams.”

“Nigeria is a football-loving nation, and FIFA is fully committed to supporting its growth. This project is a major step toward achieving that goal.”

A Star-Studded Guest List for the Historic Event

The groundbreaking ceremony will witness the presence of top government officials, sports administrators, and Nigerian football legends. Special guests include:

  • Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa
  • Ambassadors of the UAE and Morocco
  • Former Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Phillip Shaibu
  • Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun
