Governors Para Swimming Classic 2025: A Groundbreaking Event Set to Transform Para Sports in Nigeria
The stage is set for a revolutionary sporting event as the Governors Para Swimming Classic 2025 makes its highly anticipated debut from March 17th to 22nd, 2025, at the National Stadium Swimming Pool, Lagos. This first-of-its-kind competition aims to elevate para swimming in Nigeria, providing a world-class platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their talent, undergo advanced training, and compete at an elite level.

This week-long event kicks off with a 5-day scientific workshop, tailored to develop both national team athletes and emerging para swimmers through cutting-edge training techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. The program will culminate in an exciting one-day para swimming competition, set to be a landmark moment for Nigerian para sports.
In a refreshing twist, the competition will replace traditional medals with trophies, ensuring every podium finisher receives recognition befitting their achievement. The organizers are also shining a spotlight on media excellence with a special award category honoring the top three journalists who provide the best coverage of the event.

Speaking at the event’s official unveiling, Oladolupo Balogun, an event coordinator, underscored the transformative power of para swimming and the event’s mission to foster inclusivity, diversity, and excellence in Nigerian sports.
“Para swimming has the power to inspire and change lives. Through this event, we aim to provide a platform where talent is nurtured, potential is realized, and the spirit of inclusivity shines,” said Balogun.

Bose Kaffo, a Nigerian table tennis legend and driving force behind the event, expressed excitement and optimism for the inaugural competition, emphasizing its role in empowering para athletes on both national and international stages.
“We are thrilled to host the Governors Para Swimming Classic, a celebration of the incredible potential of para athletes. Naming this event after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is our way of honoring his unwavering support for grassroots sports development in Lagos State,” Kaffo stated.
She also highlighted the event’s long-term vision, which includes identifying, nurturing, and grooming new talent. With over 80 gold medals available in para swimming at major international competitions like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, this initiative aims to boost Nigeria’s global medal haul.
“Our scientific approach, powered by state-of-the-art equipment and advanced software, will be a game changer for para swimming and other sports in Nigeria,” Kaffo added.

Support from Key Sports Authorities
Mr. Sunday Odebode, President of Olympic Parasports Nigeria, pledged his full support for the event and announced plans to include para swimming in the upcoming National Sports Festival in Ogun State. He also revealed that the Olympic-sized swimming pool would be made available free of charge to any para athlete interested in training.

Mr. Fatai Williams, Vice President of Africa Aquatics, described the Governors Para Swimming Classic as a pivotal step in the broader effort to develop para swimming in Nigeria, inspired by the success of international competitions like the World Para Swimming Championships.
The well-attended unveiling ceremony brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including members of the Lagos chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), para athletes, coaches, administrators, and key figures from the Nigerian para sports community.
